Flanagan Embarks on Building a Culture of Reading in Michigan December 16, 2013
State Superintendent Mike Flanagan today announced an effort to coordinate private donations to help build a culture of reading in Michigan.“There are too many people, including children and adults, who cannot read,” Flanagan said. “We need to change that. To help build a culture of reading in Michigan, we need to get books in their hands and in their homes.”Flanagan’s announcement is a follow-up to his holiday podcast (http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-37818_45256_45257-318158--,00.html) that encouraged families to read to their children; take them to the local library; and buy books as gifts so families can build their own home collections, as well.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - Parents - sign up to receive free books for your children.
In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library... to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.
