Activity #1 (Slides 1-3) - Setting the Stage
Participants view the Turn, Turn, Turn Video #3 and use the "Setting the Stage: Portrait of a Literate Individual" placemat to record their thinking.
Discuss and list examples of each student characteristic.

Activity #2 (Slides 4-13) - Exploring the Structure of the CCSS
Participants work in teams to complete "A Treasure Hunt through the CCSS and the Appendices."

Activity #3 (Slides 14-20) - Appendix A: Research Supporting Key Elements of the Standards
Participants reflect upon a challenging class or subject studied in college and discuss what made the class or subject difficult? Debrief discussion.
Participants use Appendix A to complete a Guided Highlight Read on Paragraphs 1-4 (page 2, Appendix A).
Participants use the highlighted words to write a one-sentence summary on what they have just read.
Participants Jigsaw the following five sections:
- Foundational Skills (pp. 17-22)
- Writing (pp. 23-25)
- Speaking & Listening (pp. 26-27)
- Language (pp. 28-31)
- Vocabulary (pp. 32-35)
At each table, assign responsibility for reading sections. Each person identifies the three most important ideas from the section and records notes on the
"Jigsaw Graphic Organizer." Once completed, participants share their finds with the group.
Reflection: What are the implications of this information for curriculum, instruction, and assessment?

Participants read To Kill A Mockingbird excerpt (page 107, Appendix B).
Participants read the "Text Complexity Analysis of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee."
Use OKAPI to analyze the Quantitative Measures of To Kill a Mockingbird (model the site to the group).
